Maintaining a healthy lifestyle isn’t just about looking good in the mirror; for me, it’s about having the stamina to lead. As a Doctor of Nursing Practice and the President of The Beauty & Balance Spot, my days are a marathon of patient consultations, business meetings, and community engagement. To keep up with that pace, I’ve had to be incredibly intentional about what I put into my body.
Staying fit while managing a busy career requires more than just "eating less." It requires a strategic approach to nutrition that fuels the brain and protects the body. Over the years, I’ve refined a personal routine centered on a low-fat, low-carbohydrate, and high-protein diet. This isn't a "fad" for me, it’s a formula for longevity, muscle preservation, and sustained energy.
Why High Protein is My Non-Negotiable
As we balance the demands of work and life, one of the biggest risks we face is muscle wasting (sarcopenia) and the creeping fatigue that comes with it. Many people focus solely on the number on the scale during their weight management journey, but if you lose muscle instead of fat, you’re actually lowering your metabolism and making it harder to stay fit in the long run.
By prioritizing a high-protein intake, I ensure that my body has the necessary building blocks to repair and maintain lean muscle mass. Protein has a higher thermic effect than fats or carbs, meaning your body burns more calories just processing it. But more importantly, it keeps me full. In a high-stress environment like a wellness center, it’s easy to reach for sugary snacks when energy dips. A high-protein diet prevents those crashes.

My Approach to "Low Fat and Low Carb"
I want to be clear: "low" doesn't mean "no." Our bodies need healthy fats for hormone production and some carbohydrates for quick fuel. However, I choose to get my carbs primarily from fibrous vegetables rather than processed grains. By keeping my fat and carb intake controlled, I force my body to become efficient at utilizing its stored energy, which is key to effective weight management.
When I’m planning my meals, I look for lean protein sources like grilled chicken, turkey, egg whites, or white fish. These provide the amino acids I need without the heavy caloric load of saturated fats. This discipline allows me to stay sharp and energized from my first cup of coffee until the sun goes down over Hollywood.
The Essential Role of Leafy Greens and Iron
While protein builds the "structure," leafy greens and iron-rich foods provide the "electricity." I make it a point to eat a diet rich in dark, leafy vegetables like spinach, kale, and Swiss chard.
Leafy greens are nutritional powerhouses. They are packed with fiber, which aids digestion and keeps the gut healthy: a crucial component of overall wellness that we often discuss with our clients at The Beauty & Balance Spot. Furthermore, the nitrates found in greens like spinach can actually improve the efficiency of our mitochondria (the "power plants" of our cells), which helps combat fatigue during a long shift.
Fighting Fatigue with Iron
As a woman and a healthcare professional, I know how common iron deficiency is and how it can lead to that "heavy" feeling of exhaustion. Iron is essential for transporting oxygen through the blood to your muscles and brain. To protect myself from fatigue, I incorporate iron-rich foods like lentils, fortified cereals, and lean meats into my routine. When your blood is well-oxygenated, your focus is sharper, and your workouts are more productive.
Filling the Gaps: Vitamins and Advanced Nutrition
Even with a perfect plate, modern life can sometimes make it hard to get every single micronutrient our bodies crave. To ensure I am nourishing my body completely, I take a high-quality daily multivitamin. This acts as my nutritional safety net, ensuring that I’m never deficient in the vitamins and minerals that support immune function and cellular repair.
However, sometimes the body needs a more direct boost. This is where my professional world and personal routine collide. At The Beauty & Balance Spot, we are big believers in IV nutrition therapy. When you ingest vitamins orally, they have to pass through the digestive system, where much of the potency can be lost. IV therapy delivers those nutrients directly into the bloodstream for 100% absorption.
I often tell my patients that if they are feeling chronically "drained" despite eating well, they might need that extra boost to reset their system. It’s a tool I use myself to stay at the top of my game.

Fitness is a Holistic Journey
Building muscle and protecting yourself from muscle wasting isn't just about what you eat; it's about a lifestyle of balance. At our wellness center, we see so many people who are working hard but feel like they’ve hit a plateau. Usually, the missing piece is either a lack of protein to support their activity level or a nutrient deficiency that is making them too tired to stay consistent.
"True wellness is the balance of internal health and external confidence. When you fuel your body correctly, your natural beauty shines through effortlessly." : Dr. Barbara Sharief
If you’re looking to start your own journey, I recommend starting simple:
- Protein first: Aim for a serving of lean protein at every meal.
- Go Green: Fill half your plate with leafy greens.
- Hydrate: Water is the most underrated nutrient for weight management.
- Supplement Wisely: Use a multivitamin or explore IV nutrition therapy to address specific deficiencies.
